Skills sessions

These are the fun times at university. Going into the mock wards and practicing your skills ready for placement.

Enema probably isn’t the most fun one πŸ˜‚ I’m hoping I never have to give a patient one of these! I’ll give you 2 guesses where they go? Haha!
I liked the injection technique sessions! I’m a little bit weird and like to give injections and take bloods…. :-/ Β In my previous healthcare role in the sexual health clinic, I was trained to take blood tests from patients. It’s something i have mastered and I always get really good feedback from patients saying they didn’t feel it or I was very gentle. As a student nurse we aren’t allowed to take blood test or go near any veins what so ever! But we can give injections with training and watching our mentor first and then whilst being supervised can administer πŸ™‚ My first time, I will be nervous doing that! But at the same time I’m so excited. I love doing new things and learning new skills! There’s always room to improve yourself too. Even as a qualified nurse I will continue to train and progress myself further.

At university we have the S.P.A.C.E (skills practice and care enhancement) which is a huge room with a ward setting and tables. It has lots of learning, procedures, equipment etc to practice all of our skills on if we need extra practice. It’s an amazing place and I’ve made good use of it so far!

At Birmingham City University, they do everything they can to enhance practice and support your learning. I love this place!
