HARS seminar – Continuing Personal development

Wednesday 4th April 2018:

I had my first High Achievers Recognision Scheme (HARS) seminar. This is a series of seminars to aid you to be your ‘best self.’ Furthermore, today’s seminar was based around personal development.

I did not know what to expect from this seminar but I did leave pleasantly surprised!
We started off with talking about continuing professional development (CPD); what this means and why we need it. Some things we came up with were:ZqY01QX0T8OXZrEkb2pmkA

  • Career development
  • Keep skills and knowledge up to date
  • Used for revalidation
  • Build on current knowledge
  • Builds confidence / competence
  • Keep up to date with policies, guidelines and laws
  • Sharing the knowledge / skills with colleagues and patients

Following this, as student nurses we should be keeping a record of everything we are doing that is enabling us  to be our ‘best self.’ For Birmingham City University, we have our online portfolio  called Mahara were we log these things. This could be things like:

  • Placements
  • Lectures and the knowledge you have gained
  • Skills sessions
  • Extra workshops you attend
  • Voluntary work
  • E-learning
  • Reflections
  • Blogging
  • Vlogging

Pretty much anything that has helped you on your journey.

Like little building blocks that have helped shape you into the nurse you become or want to become.

After this we spoke about leadership and what would make the ‘perfect’ leader?  I personally do not think anyone can be perfect and the world would be a pretty boring place if it was a perfect place. However, saying this, a little bit of world peace would be fantastic!

So, what does the ideal leader look like to you? What qualities would they have? IMG_8668 Leave some comments below, I would love to hear people’s thoughts on this. Here are
some things we came up with in the workshop:

  • Balanced person
  • Confident and strong
  • Knowledgeable
  • Listener and approachable
  • Manages up and down (rolls their sleeves up and helps)
  • Motivating and inspiring
  • Trustworthy
  • Uses evidence based practice
  • Set goals
  • Clarity
  • Self-belief

Following this, we spoke about what parts of these qualities we have ourselves and the ones that we do not have but we would like to have. Moreover, as nurses we should have leadership skills. Whether we are a leader for our patient / families of, or our colleagues, we all need that leadership skill and this is so important to enable us to become our best self, not just for ourselves but for others too.

Anyone that is part of the HARS that could not make it or students that are not part of the HARS yet, I hope this gives you a little insight to what it is all about. I have loved it so far and I am really looking forward to the rest of the seminar series. Future students, get aiming for this scheme 🙂 It is fantastic, another amazing part of Birmingham City University that will not disappoint. Thank you all for your time and input to this scheme.

On the 18th of April I shall be attending the next seminar of the series ‘leadership’ which will be building on today’s seminar. I am really excited for the next seminar! I have learnt so much already and it has really made me think about the nurse I will be when I qualify and what I can do now to get there.
