Starting my last placement of second year on Monday!

Dear Diary,

So I start my last placement for second year on Monday. I will be back on the wards again, it feels like forever since I have been on a ward… November 2017! Wow, this year REALLY has flown past me. I wanted to do a little blog post on this, do a blog series about my experience working on an orthopaedic ward. Hopefully it will be helpful to some others students out there if you get a placement here.

What am I looking forward to learning?

There are a few things actually;

  1. Getting my head around the ward routines again
  2. I’d like to discharge a patient, I haven’t had this opportunity yet!
  3. I would like to do the pre-op checklist with the patient
  4. Pain management
  5. Experience a pathway of following the patient through to theatres and back again
  6. I’m excited to do more wounds! I love wound management

What am I least looking forward too?

Literally one thing and one thing only, the long days and drive there and back. I live around 22-24 miles away from placement and if I go by public transport it takes around 2 hours to get there on 2 buses. I have to leave my house and be on the bus at 4.30am!! Not the one for me haha. I am a morning person but even that is too early for me. Luckily, I can borrow the car so it will take an hour there and then an hour and a half back home (due to being more traffic in the evening). So my days are literally going to be, 5am until 9pm with the travel times added. It’s absolutely exhausting, but luckily we only do 3 days a week and get 4 days off. Those 4 days off are much needed and I do not have any exams or assignments left to do yay! I will be able to make the most of every single minute of my time off.

What am I doing to prepare?

  1. Filling out my initial interview questions in my placement document ready for my mentor to go over with me in my first week
  2. Researching around orthopaedic surgery
  3. Refreshing my brain with general observations and physiology
  4. Going over our lecture power points about pain management and the analgesia ladder.
  5. Called my placement and got my first 3 weeks of shifts

I am on this placement for 8 weeks. 24th September until the 24th November  and then that will be me finished for second year. I know?! What happened this year everyone? People keep telling me third year goes so fast, I dread to think how fast if this is how second year has gone haha.

So, next week I will update you all on my placement and how it is all going. For now, have an amazing weekend!
